Few laundry accidents are as frustrating as discovering a bleach stain on your favorite colored shirt, dress, or pair of pants. Whether a splash of bleach occurred during cleaning or a colored garment accidentally came into contact with a whitening product, many people assume the damage is permanent.
While bleach removes color from fabric and cannot truly be “washed out,” there are a few techniques that may help minimize the appearance of bleach marks and improve the look of the garment. Before throwing away a stained item or resorting to fabric dye, consider trying these simple methods.
Why Bleach Stains Are So Difficult to Remove
Unlike ordinary stains that sit on the surface of fabric, bleach works by removing or altering the dye in the material itself. This means that the affected area has actually lost color rather than becoming dirty.

Because of this, restoring bleach-damaged clothing can be challenging. However, certain treatments may help neutralize remaining bleach residue and improve the appearance of the fabric.
Safety First
Before attempting any repair:
- Wear gloves when handling cleaning products.
- Work in a well-ventilated area.
- Test any solution on a hidden area of the garment first.
- Never mix cleaning chemicals unless specifically recommended.
Method 1: Sodium Thiosulfate Treatment
Sodium thiosulfate is commonly used to neutralize chlorine bleach and may help prevent further damage to fabric.
What You’ll Need
- 1 cup (250 ml) room-temperature water
- 1 tablespoon sodium thiosulfate
Instructions
- Pour the water into a small bowl.
- Add the sodium thiosulfate and stir until completely dissolved.
- Apply the solution directly to the bleach-affected area.
- Allow it to sit for several minutes.
- Rinse thoroughly with cold water.
- Wash the garment according to its care label instructions.
Important: Avoid rubbing the fabric, as this may damage the fibers further.
