For the Salisbury Steak Patties
- 500–700 g lean ground beef (90–95% lean)
- 1/3 cup oat flour or breadcrumbs
- 1 large egg
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 tablespoon fresh parsley, chopped (optional)
For the Mushroom Onion Gravy
- 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
- 200–250 g mushrooms, sliced
- 2 cups low-sodium beef broth
- 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tablespoon tomato paste
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- Salt and black pepper to taste
For Thickening
- 2 teaspoons cornstarch
- 2 tablespoons cold water
Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Salisbury Steak Patties
In a large mixing bowl, combine:
- Lean ground beef
- Oat flour or breadcrumbs
- Egg
- Worcestershire sauce
- Garlic powder
- Onion powder
- Salt
- Black pepper
- Parsley (if using)
Mix gently until just combined. Avoid overmixing, which can make the patties dense.
Form the mixture into 4 to 6 oval-shaped patties.
Step 2: Optional Searing for Extra Flavor
For a deeper, richer flavor, heat a skillet over medium-high heat and lightly brown the patties for 1 to 2 minutes per side.
This step is optional but adds additional texture and enhances the overall flavor of the dish.
Step 3: Prepare the Slow Cooker
Spread the sliced onions and mushrooms evenly across the bottom of the slow cooker.
Place the Salisbury steak patties on top.
Step 4: Make the Gravy
In a medium bowl, whisk together:
- Beef broth
- Worcestershire sauce
- Tomato paste
- Minced garlic
Pour the mixture evenly over the patties.
Season lightly with salt and pepper.
Step 5: Slow Cook
Cover and cook:
- Low: 6–7 hours
- High: 3–4 hours
The patties should be tender and fully cooked through.
Step 6: Thicken the Gravy
About 20 minutes before serving, mix the cornstarch and cold water together to create a slurry.
Stir the slurry into the slow cooker gravy.
Cover and continue cooking until the gravy thickens.
Step 7: Serve
Carefully transfer the Salisbury steak patties to serving plates.
Spoon the rich mushroom onion gravy over the top and serve hot.
